Around the Apiary

A difficult year, in many ways. Our bees have given us the opportunity for some respite from the many restrictions imposed by lockdown. We continue to make essential visits to the apiary to make sure that their welfare is assured. Despite the difficulties of this season, we are pleased to report that our colonies are thriving. Queens have been replaced, at every opportunity presented to the bees and beekeeper. The training apiary has expanded in colony numbers. Such a shame that we haven’t been able to invite our beekeepers to the site, especially difficult with the faltering start to our acclaimed ‘new beekeepers’ course this year. We will get back on track!

Mid-August and a very healthy surplus of honey extracted, with more to come, no doubt. Our next interventions will be to check on the welfare of our colonies, in preparation for the onset of cooler and shorter days and the big winter slumber. Weird times indeed – but our bees continue to do what bees do best, undaunted!
