CHAIRMANS CHAT

Well here we are November and just as we thought Covid was slowing we are back into lockdown. Fortunately our bees are themselves going into lockdown so beekeeping is at a minimum. However, ensure that your colonies are well fed, if required, draught free and clear of long grass as this harbours moisture which bees do not like. Also, now is the time to start and check equipment for damage and cleanliness and to set out plans for the coming spring.

In 2021, at the training apiary in Bastonford, we intend to restart basic training for those who want to progress their craft. I feel it is essential that all beekeepers should at least take up the chance of the basic assessment as it will only enhance the enjoyment of beekeeping.

We will endevour to carry out a Queen-rearing program in 2021, as part of training but also to see if we can produce our own Queens from our own stock to see if we can achieve an apiary with bees fit for our area that are productive, easy to handle, are good survivors in winter and bad spells of summer, need little extra feeding and become varroa tolerant. With this in mind please do contact us as we will need to have ‘out apiaries’ for mating and making increase. It is also hoped we will be able to supply new beekeepers with their first colonies and new Queens to our members.

Finally your training apiary has produced some 150 lbs (68 kgs) of excellent honey so please contact Vicky if you need supplies especially with Christmas around the corner.
