CHAIRMANS CHAT

We are now into March that over the past few years does not know if its spring or winter. So regular observation of our hives is needed. On some sunny days bees will be flying and check to see if they are bringing in pollen which looks as if the queen is starting to begin laying. It is a great temptation to do an inspection of our hives in March but unless the hive looks to have a problem just regular observation is best. If you think you need to check do so on a calm and clear day and be as quick as possible. Look into the hive between the frames and do not move frames. However if the hives appears to not have survived the winter see if you can find out why. But do close up the hive completely with a view to removing as soon as convenient. Continue with the books you have so diligently been reading over the winter , especially the ones on Bee Diseases so that recognition becomes easy at every inspection. Some of us slow learners are taking the BBKA Module exams on line in April via Zoom. If you feel up to it I recommend you do attempt one as it can only be of benefit in the future. There are several Zoom webinars on at the moment given by BIBBA on all aspects of beekeeping and given by some of the UK’s best beekeepers. They are also available on Youtube as a recording. I do recommend them but like me you may need to lie down in a dark room after some of them. Let us now look forward to the new beekeeping year and lockdown , if we all stick to the rules, will be over and apiary meetings can begin in earnest.
